  • Calculated Killing”: Maharashtra Man Jailed For Murdering Bedridden Wife

A court in Maharashtra’s Thane district has sentenced a 71-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment for life for murdering his bedridden wife, citing that it was a “deliberate and calculated killing”.

Additional sessions judge V L Bhosale convicted Shobhnath Rajeshwar Shukla of charges under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code for the murder of his wife, Sharada.

The court, while refusing to show leniency towards the accused, took note of the “calculated nature of murder” and “complete exploitation of the victim’s vulnerability”, saying “mercy cannot be extended at the cost of justice.” As per the case details, the victim died at her house in the Wagle Estate area of Thane city on November 8, 2019, and one of her sons was informed about her death. At the Civil Hospital, the victim’s son observed suspicious marks on her neck, covered with a white ointment, prompting him to file a police complaint.

The post-mortem report concluded Sharada’s death was due to asphyxia.

Additional public prosecutor R P Patil informed the court about the strained relationship between the elderly couple.

Sharada, a widow with three sons from her first marriage, married Shobhnath, also a widower. There was a dispute between the couple over a room constructed with money from the sale of Sharada’s first husband’s property. She wished to transfer her share of the room to her youngest son, but Shobhnath resisted, wanting it to be transferred to his son, Ashok.

  • Girl, 9, Falls While Riding Bicycle, Angry Father Kills Her With Axe In Maharashtra

The girl was killed by her father with an axe in Maharashtra’s Dharashiv district on Sunday, hours after she fell while riding.

The man allegedly kept her body at their home for 24 hours after the murder.

    Dharashiv (Maharashtra):

A girl fell while riding her bicycle, unaware that it would lead to her death.

She was killed by her father with an axe in Maharashtra’s Dharashiv district on Sunday, hours after the nine-year-old girl fell while riding a bicycle.

As per the police, the girl, Gauri, used to fall ill frequently, which frustrated her father, Gyaneshwar Jadhav.

Her fall from the bicycle on Sunday angered her father so much that he decided to kill her. He attacked her with an axe while she was sleeping. Jadhav was allegedly drunk when he killed his daughter.

He allegedly kept her body at their home in Paranda taluka for 24 hours after the murder, the police said. Jadhav has been arrested.

“The accused, Gyaneshwar Jadhav, killed his nine-year-old daughter Gauri with an axe. His daughter, who was ill frequently, fell while riding a bicycle. The father got angry and killed his daughter by hitting her with an axe while she was sleeping,” said Gorakshanath Kharad, Assistant Police Inspector, Aamby Police Station.

This comes a week after a man killed his daughter for scoring low marks in a mock test in Sangli. Sadhna Bhonsle – a Class 12 student – was preparing for pre-medical test, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET, and was taking mock tests for it. She scored low marks in her practice tests, which angered her father, Dhondiram Bhonsle, so much that he beat the 17-year-old to death.

  • Amid Shefali Jariwala Death, Doctor Explains Risks Of Steroids, Hormonal Therapies

The death of ‘Kaanta Laga’ fame Shefali Jariwala, who reportedly died due to a cardiac arrest last week, has once again put a spotlight on the rising cases of heart attacks in adults in India. The disturbing increase of cardiovascular diseases in even those people who keep themselves seemingly fit, is a cause of concern – and triggers a question: are fitness therapies and workouts enough?

Dr Dhirendra Singhania, Principal Consultant of Interventional Cardiology at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospitals in Kaushambi, spoke exclusively to NDTV on the issue, saying the major causes of risk in heart attacks are: steroids, lack of sleep, and hormonal therapies (especially for women).

“Everyone, whether a celebrity or a common man, if they are not following the rules of the body, they will have problems. In celebrities, they all try to maintain their body for fit appearances. Many times, we don’t know what they do to achieve that. Lack of sleep has been known as a cardiac risk factor – many celebrities are awake for almost the whole night at times,” he said.

Dr Singhania added, “Steroids, drug overdoses, and hormonal therapies for women, such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT for menopause) and oral contraceptives, can contribute to heart attack risk.”

Additionally, the cardiologist said stress and social media addiction contribute to increased blood pressure and cortisol levels – which eventually lead to cardiovascular diseases.

  • NDB Chief Rousseff Joins Yoga Event In Shanghai, Condoles Air India Crash

New Development Bank (NDB) President and former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff attended the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 curtain raiser event in Shanghai on Friday.

New Development Bank (NDB) President and former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff attended the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 curtain raiser event in Shanghai on Friday.

During her address, Rousseff expressed profound grief over the tragic crash of the Air India flight in Ahmedabad and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families.

“Speaking at the #IDY2025 curtain raiser, Dilma Rouseff, President of New Development Bank and former President of Brazil, expressed deep sorrow on the tragic crash of the Air India flight in Ahmedabad, and conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and Government of India. She also expressed her best wishes for the speedy recovery of the sole survivor,” the Consulate General of India in Shanghai said in a post on X.

The London-bound Air India 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday, killing all 241 people on board, including crew members. One person survived and is currently being treated.

Speaking on the significance of the International Day of Yoga, Rousseff said the occasion had become a symbol of peace and resilience.

“Yoga is one of India’s greatest gifts to the world, a practice that transcends geography, language and belief. Rooted in ancient wisdom, yoga teaches us how to live in balance with ourselves, with others and the world. That’s why the United Nations adopted the proposal made by Prime Minister @narendramodi to recognise June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. Since then, this day has become a symbol of peace and resilience, values that are very important in today’s world,” Rousseff said, as quoted by the Consulate.

Consul General Pratik Mathur and other Indian officials were present at the event, which marked the beginning of celebrations leading up to IDY 2025.

India’s national celebration will be held in Visakhapatnam, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) session alongside over five lakh participants. Concurrently, ‘Yoga Sangam’ sessions will take place at more than one lakh locations across India, in what is expected to be one of the world’s largest synchronised yoga demonstrations.

Rousseff also praised India’s role in founding the New Development Bank and highlighted PM Modi’s key contribution.

“Recognising India’s pivotal role in the establishment of NDB, she said, ‘India is not only a founding member of NDB, it’s a country without which this bank would not exist. Prime Minister Modi was one of the founders and all of us are on a mission to create an important bank for the world,” the Consulate General added.

  • Reunion After 15 Years, Then Disaster: Couple, 2 Children Killed In Crash

37-year-old Javed, his wife Maryam, their five-year-old son and four-year-old daughter were among the 242 people aboard Air India flight AI 171, which crashed into a building in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Reunion After 15 Years, Then Disaster: Couple, 2 Children Killed In Crash

The brother remembers it as a perfect celebration. All four siblings had gathered in Ahmedabad with their families to celebrate Eid al-Adha with their mother and it was a reunion that had been awaited for 15 years.

    That was last Friday.

Less than a week later, the family’s world came crashing around them.

37-year-old Javed, his wife Maryam, their five-year-old son and four-year-old daughter were among the 242 people aboard Air India flight AI 171, which crashed into a building in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Javed’s mother, who is a heart patient and was slated to undergo a surgery soon, has still not been told that she has lost not just her son, but her daughter-in-law and two young grandchildren.

Speaking to NDTV on Friday at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where samples are being collected to carry out DNA tests to identify the victims, Javed’s brother, Imtiaz, said the family is devastated.

“He was my brother. He had come to Ahmedabad to celebrate a happy moment. Now we have lost four family members. Who is responsible for this? Over 240 people have died. Will we keep losing people from our families… The plane had just taken off and crashed in a few seconds, how can this happen?” he asked.

Javed, Imtiaz said, had gone to the UK to study 11 years ago, met Maryam there and eventually became a British citizen.

“Javed had come here to celebrate Eid with our mother. She has stents in her heart and another was supposed to be inserted in two weeks. We are four brothers and sisters and have not gathered together for 15 years. Sometimes two of us would meet, sometimes three. This time, all of us got together and met our mother. Everything was perfect, just perfect,” he said in Hindi.

Asked whether their mother had been informed about the deaths, Imtiaz’s brother said, “She hasn’t been told yet. She has heart issues. We have told her that an investigation is on, she has probably been told they have been admitted to a hospital.”

“There’s a pall of gloom over the family. They had two small children with them. I am sure you can understand…” he trailed off.

    Wait For Body

Imtiaz said he had given his blood sample to identify Javed’s body on Thursday night.

“I have been searching every hospital, hoping some mistake had been made with the names and they are there. We are being told the bodies have been charred beyond recognition, which I am not being able to accept. Only once the DNA report comes will we know… We are being told we will be given the report by Sunday, I wonder how they will do that for so many people by then,” he said.

Of the 242 passengers on the plane, 241 were killed. At least 10 people also died at the BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar, where the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed.

  • Real Madrid Sign River Plate Starlet Franco Mastantuono

Franco Mastantuono is Real Madrid’s third signing this summer behind Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth.

Real Madrid have agreed a deal to sign teenage playmaker Franco Mastantuono from River Plate, the Spanish giants announced on Friday. The 17-year-old attacking midfielder will cost Madrid 45 million euros ($52 million) according to Spanish media, while Argentine reports suggest the price may be as high as 60 million euros. Mastantuono will play in the Club World Cup in the United States this summer with River before moving to the Spanish capital.

“Mastantuono will be a player at our club for the next six seasons, from 14 August 2025 to 30 June 2031,” said Los Blancos in a statement.

“At 17, he is also the youngest player to play an official match for the Argentina national team in its history.”

The midfielder came through the River academy and made his first team debut for the club in January 2024.

He is Real Madrid’s third signing this summer behind Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth.

Madrid also appointed Xabi Alonso as their new coach to replace Carlo Ancelotti, after failing to win a major trophy this season.

  • After Years Of Waiting, Israel’s Netanyahu Finally Makes His Move On Iran

On Friday, after two decades of continually raising the alarm and urging other world leaders to act, Netanyahu finally decided to go it alone, authorising an Israeli air assault aimed, Israel says, at preventing Iran from obtaining weapons of mass destruction.

Iran once ridiculed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the boy who cried wolf for his constant public warnings about Tehran’s nuclear programme, and his repeated threats to shut it down, one way or another.

“You can only fool some of the people so many times,” Iran’s then-foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said in 2018 after Netanyahu had once again accused Iran of planning to build nuclear weapons.

On Friday, after two decades of continually raising the alarm and urging other world leaders to act, Netanyahu finally decided to go it alone, authorising an Israeli air assault aimed, Israel says, at preventing Iran from obtaining weapons of mass destruction.

In an address to the nation, Netanyahu, as he has so often before, evoked the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust in World War Two to explain his decision.

“Nearly a century ago, facing the Nazis, a generation of leaders failed to act in time,” Netanyahu said, adding that a policy of appeasing Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler had led to the deaths of 6 million Jews, “a third of my people”.

“After that war, the Jewish people and the Jewish state vowed never again. Well, never again is now today. Israel has shown that we have learned the lessons of history.”

Iran says its nuclear energy programme is only for peaceful purposes, although the International Atomic Energy Agency on Thursday declared the country in breach of its non-proliferation obligations for the first time in almost 20 years.

Netanyahu, a former member of an elite special forces unit responsible for some of Israel’s most daring hostage rescues, has dominated its politics for decades, becoming the longest-serving prime minister when he won an unprecedented sixth term in 2022.

Throughout his years in office, he rarely missed an opportunity to lecture foreign leaders about the dangers posed by Iran, displaying cartoons of an atomic bomb at the United Nations, while always hinting he was ready to strike.

In past premierships, military analysts said his room for manoeuvre with Iran was limited by fears an attack would trigger instant retaliation from Tehran’s regional proxies, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, that would be hard to contain.

But the past two years have upended the Middle East, with Israel hammering Hamas after it launched a massive surprise attack of its own against Israel in October 2023, and then dismantling much of Hezbollah in just a few days in 2024.

    BLINDSIDED BY TRUMP

Israel has also sparred openly with Tehran since 2024, firing rocket salvos deep into Iran last year that gave Netanyahu confidence in the power of his military reach.

Israeli military sources said the strikes disabled four of Iran’s Russian-made air-defence systems, including one positioned near Natanz, a key Iranian nuclear site that was targeted, according to Iranian television.

“Iran is more exposed than ever to strikes on its nuclear facilities. We have the opportunity to achieve our most important goal – to thwart and eliminate the existential threat,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said in November.

But much to the consternation of Netanyahu, newly installed U.S. President Donald Trump blindsided him during a visit to the White House in April, when he announced the United States and Iran were poised to begin direct nuclear talks.

Netanyahu has locked horns with successive U.S. presidents over Iran, most noticeably Barack Obama, who approved a deal with Tehran in 2015 imposing significant restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Trump pulled out of the accord in 2018, and Netanyahu had hoped that he would continue to take an uncompromising stance against Iran when he returned to office this year.

In announcing talks, the White House set a two-month deadline for Iran to sign a deal. Even though a fresh round of meetings was set for this weekend, the unofficial deadline expired on Thursday and Netanyahu pounced.

One Israeli official told state broadcaster Kan that Israel had coordinated with Washington ahead of the attacks and suggested recent newspaper reports of a rift between Trump and Netanyahu over Iran had been a ruse to lull the Tehran leadership into a false sense of security.

    IMAGE TARNISHED

Trump – who said after the strikes began that Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb but that he wants talks to proceed – has previously hailed the right-wing Netanyahu as a great friend. Other leaders have struggled with him.

In 2011, then-President Nicolas Sarkozy of France was overheard talking about Netanyahu with Obama. “I can’t stand him any more, he’s a liar,” he said.

The man once known as “King Bibi” to his supporters has faced a difficult few years and at 75, time is running out for him to secure his legacy.

His hawkish image was badly tarnished by the 2023 Hamas attack, with polls showing most Israelis blaming him for the security failures that allowed the deadliest assault since the founding of the nation more than 75 years ago.

He has subsequently been indicted by the International Criminal Court over possible war crimes tied to Israel’s 20-month invasion of Gaza, which has reduced much of the Palestinian territory to rubble. He rejects the charges against him.

Polls show most Israelis believe the war in Gaza has gone on for too long, with Netanyahu dragging out the conflict to stay in power and stave off elections that pollsters say he will lose.

Even as the multi-front war has progressed, he has had to take the stand in his own, long-running corruption trial, where he denies any wrongdoing, which has further dented his reputation at home.

However, he hopes a successful military campaign against Israel’s arch foe will secure his place in the history books he so loves to read.

“Generations from now, history will record that our generation stood its ground, acted in time and secured our common future. May God bless Israel. May God bless the forces of civilisation, everywhere,” he said in Friday’s speech.
