  • Elk Roams Into Cafe-Packed Street In Central Stockholm

Early risers in Stockholm glimpsed an unusual sight on Monday when an elk strayed into the city centre and roamed a street of popular eateries before being put down, police said.

Police began receiving reports of the young elk, also known as a moose in North America, on the outskirts of the Swedish capital in the early hours of Monday morning.

Reports later came in of it walking around central streets, including the Rorstrandsgatan strip packed with cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating, which were closed at the time.

Animal control agents finally put the animal down around 7:00 am (0500 GMT).

“When elk are in densely populated areas there can be a danger for traffic and such, so a decision was made to put the animal down,” Stockholm police spokeswoman Susanna Rinaldo told AFP.

Elk are found in most areas of Sweden and an adult can grow to over two metres (6.5 feet) tall and weigh between 200 and 800 kilograms.

Anna Westberg, another police spokeswoman, told broadcaster SVT it was likely a calf that had been rejected by its mother and become confused.

  • US To Revoke Visas For Glastonbury Band Over Anti-Israel Chant

The United States said Monday it was revoking visas for the British punk-rap group Bob Vylan, which led a chant at the Glastonbury festival calling for death to the Israeli military.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said that the United States has “revoked the US visas for the members of the Bob Vylan band in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants.”

“Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” he posted on X.

President Donald Trump’s administration has aggressively revoked visas, mostly of students, over anti-Israel activism.

Bob Vylan, a London-based duo combining punk riffs and hip-hop delivery whose lyricism often tackles racism, led a chant of “Death to the IDF,” the initials of the Israel Defense Forces, at the celebrated music festival.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the group’s “appalling hate speech” and the BBC apologized for not pulling a livestream.

The controversy comes after a protracted dispute over another act at Glastonbury, politically charged Belfast hip-hop group Kneecap, who sharply criticized Israel’s action.

Glastonbury rebuffed pressure, including from Starmer, to remove Kneecap from the roster but the BBC did not stream Kneecap’s performance.

Both Kneecap and Bob Vylan, who also played Coachella, had dates scheduled for later this year in the United State.

  • Meta, TikTok Can Be Sued By Mother Of New York Teen Killed While ‘Subway Surfing’

Meta Platforms and TikTok owner ByteDance must face a wrongful death lawsuit by the mother of a 15-year-old Manhattan boy who died while “subway surfing” on a moving train, a New York state judge ruled.

Meta Platforms and TikTok owner ByteDance must face a wrongful death lawsuit by the mother of a 15-year-old Manhattan boy who died while “subway surfing” on a moving train, a New York state judge ruled.

Justice Paul Goetz ruled on Friday that Norma Nazario can try to prove Meta and ByteDance “goaded” her son Zackery into subway surfing by addicting him to Instagram and TikTok, where he viewed content about “dangerous challenges.”

Meta, ByteDance and Snapchat parent Snap have faced thousands of lawsuits saying their platforms are addictive, causing harm to children, schools and governments.

Zackery Nazario died on February 20, 2023, after he and his girlfriend climbed atop a Brooklyn-bound J train as it crossed the Williamsburg Bridge.

Goetz said Norma Nazario may pursue wrongful death, product liability and negligence claims.

He dismissed her claims against New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority, saying common sense and “the realities of life in this city” should have signaled to Zackery that subway surfing was dangerous.

Meta, ByteDance and their lawyers had no immediate comment. Norma Nazario’s lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The MTA did not immediately respond to a similar request.

  • Kolkata College Student’s Rape, Its Video Recording Was Planned By Accused: Report

Investigating officials probing the rape of a law college student at Kasba in Kolkata revealed that the accused Monojit Mishra targeted the survivor in a pre-planned manner and the two other accused persons namely Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay became active facilitators in this well-thought-out crime, IANS reported.

IANS reported, quoting sources, that both Ahmed and Mukhopadhyay have admitted that the video recording of the crime was also a part of the well-thought-out crime to blackmail the survivor so that the latter did not approach the police or reveal to anyone about what happened on that night.

They said that all these pre-planned actions were foiled because of the courage shown by the survivor, who, instead of succumbing to the trauma, immediately rushed to the nearest police station to lodge the complaint.

They said that an investigation is also being carried out to find out whether the video clip of the crime had already been circulated to anybody.Several such videos were stored in the mobile phones of the three accused, especially that of Mishra, which hints towards their addition of such items,” sources reveal.

In the case of the R.G. Kar rape and murder case in August last year, several pornographic clips were recovered from the mobile phone of the sole convict in the case and civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who had been recently sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in Kolkata.

Meanwhile, the four members of BJP’s fact-finding team in the matter of Kasba law college rape arrived in Kolkata on Monday. They have claimed that they apprehended that the administration would create hurdles for them to freely probe the matter.

“We want to meet the victim and her parents. We do not know how far it will be possible since, from the very beginning, the ruling party had been opposing us from coming to Kolkata to investigate the matter. This is a perfect example of an undemocratic thought process,” said a member of the fact-finding team and BJP’s Lok Sabha member Satpal Singh, who is also a former cop.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said it is imperative to call out terrorism publicly when it is supported by a state against a neighbour and is fuelled by the bigotry of extremism, a strong reference to Pakistan.

Mr Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to the US, made the remarks while inaugurating an exhibition titled ‘The Human Cost of Terrorism’ at the UN headquarters.

The exhibition, which will be on display at two locations in the UN headquarters from June 30-July 3 and July 7-July 11, opened a day before Pakistan begins its Presidency of the UN Security Council for July on Tuesday.

“When terrorism is supported by a state against the neighbour, when it is fuelled by the bigotry of extremism, when it drives a whole host of illegal activities, it is imperative to call it out publicly and one way of doing so is to display the havoc that it has wreaked on global society,” Mr Jaishankar said. The exhibition is seen as an effort to draw global support for India’s campaign against cross-border terrorism from Pakistan.

The digital exhibition displays the horrific terror attacks perpetrated across the world, including the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and the Pahalgam terror attack, and names the terror outfits responsible for carrying out the attacks, including several Pakistan-based individuals and entities such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group.

“This exhibition is a modest yet resolute effort to give voice to those who can no longer speak, a tribute to those who were taken away from us and a remembrance of the lives shattered by the scourge of terrorism,” he said, adding that the images and visuals in the exhibition, each moment, each memory.

  • BJP Gets New State Chiefs, Moves Closer To Elect New National President

The BJP has now new state presidents, including some who were reelected, in 16 states, a figure that will rise on Tuesday. Some big states like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh may also follow in the next few days.

The BJP on Monday moved towards rolling out the exercise to have a new national president as the party elected chiefs in some states and is set to announce more on Tuesday that will put the requisite number of state heads at the helm for it to pick the replacement of J P Nadda.

The BJP’s constitution requires the election of its presidents in at least 19 out of its 37 organisational states before the process to elect its national president begins, and the ruling party is set to cross the threshold on Tuesday.

V P Ramalingam and K Beichhua were elected BJP presidents of Puducherry and Mizoram respectively on Monday, while single nomination for the post was filed in states like Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, making their election a mere formality on Tuesday.

The BJP has now new state presidents, including some who were reelected, in 16 states, a figure that will rise on Tuesday. Some big states like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh may also follow in the next few days.

The BJP has picked seasoned organisational men but with low public profile in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in Ramchander Rao and P V N Madhav respectively.

Maharashtra BJP working president and four-term MLA Ravindra Chavan is set to be elected president in place of Chandrashekhar Bawankule, a Cabinet minister in the BJP-led government in the state, while incumbent Uttarakhand president and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt is set to begin a new term.

The development has brightened the prospect for the BJP to elect its new national president to replace Mr Nadda, a Cabinet minister in the Modi government, in July.

Rao’s choice, however, triggered a furious reaction from fiery Hindutva leader and MLA T Raja Singh, who resigned from the BJP. The elevation of Rao, a relatively low profile in the Telangana organisation riven with factionalism, is being seen as a balancing act and also a reward to old organisation hands.

  • 3 Weeks After Wedding, Woman Kills Husband With Axe In His Sleep

In a fit of rage, the woman, Radhika Lokhande, picked up an axe and hit her husband on the head, officials said. He died on the spot.

Days after the Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, another chilling incident has come to light from Maharashtra, where a woman killed her husband with an axe while he was sleeping – just three weeks after they got married. The incident took place on the night of June 10 shortly after the newlywed couple fought, officials said on Thursday.

According to the police, the couple got married on May 23 in Maharashtra’s Sangli district.

On Tuesday night, the two fought aggressively, following which the victim, Anil Lokhande, went to sleep around midnight.

In a fit of rage, the woman, Radhika Lokhande, picked up an axe and hit her husband on the head, officials said. He died on the spot.

Raja and Sonam got married on May 11. They left for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20, before going “missing” three days later. When their family members could not reach them, they reached out to the police. What initially started as a probe to find the couple, turned into a murder investigation when Raja’s body was found in a gorge on June 2, ten days after the brutal crime. His preliminary autopsy report revealed that he was attacked twice – once each on the back and front of his head. On the night of June 7, the ‘missing’ wife was found in an unconscious state at a ‘dhaba’ in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police, and was subsequently taken into custody.

Sonam, 24, and her lover, Raj, were arrested on Monday along with their three aides, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. They have been sent to eight days police custody.
